JDT LIFT MAIDEN MALAYSIA SUPER LEAGUE TITLE
June 25th, 2014Kuching: Johor Darul Takzim won their maiden Malaysia Super League title as they downed Sarawak 1-0 at the Sarawak Stadium on Wednesday. The national player-studded team, commonly known as JDT, had to wait until the last moments in their match to clinch the title after several shock losses to non-favourite teams previously in the season.
Argentine striker Jorge Pereyra Díaz scored the goal on 66 minutes lifting JDT to the top of the table with 44 points from 22 games, three points clear of second place finishers Selangor.
The Southern Tigers also went into the match with only a point above Selangor in the table and desperately needed the win to steer clear of the closely trailing competitors who in the day’s other match drew 2-2 with PKNS. ~ The AFC
CHARITY SHIELD BOOST FOR JDT AHEAD OF ACL PRELIMINARY CLASH
January 31st, 2015Johor Bahru: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) enjoyed a timely boost ahead of their crucial AFC Champions League 2015 Preliminary Round 1 match with Bengaluru with a 2-0 victory over Pahang to claim the 2015 Malaysia Super League-opening Charity Shield on Saturday.
Brazilian defender Marcos Antonio opened the scoring in the 37th minute when he headed home his first goal for JDT since joining the club in April last year to replace Singaporean defender Baihakki Khaizan before Luciano Figueroa, who was part of Argentina’s 2004 Olympic-gold winning squad, also found the net with a header, with the 33-year-old forward’s goal just before the hour mark sealed the win.
JDT’s victory saw them gain a modicum of revenge for their penalty shootout defeat to Pahang last year’s Malaysia Cup final, which qualified the Elephants to the 2015 AFC Cup where they have been drawn to face Hong Kong’s South China, tournament debutants Global FC from the Philippines and either Yadanarbon or Yangon United depending on the former’s fortune in the AFC Champions League playoff phase.
The Southern Tigers will be looking to bring their Charity Shield winning form into Wednesday’s continental clash in Johor and take a step closer to a first appearance in Asia’s premier club competition with victory over Bengaluru in the first stage of the playoffs.
The winners of the intriguing encounter between the Malaysia Super League champions and a Bengaluru team that their first Indian title just a year after formation in 2013 will advance to Preliminary Round 2 where they will face Bangkok Glass in Thailand six days later. China’s Beijing Guoan await the victorious side in the Playoff on February 17, with a coveted place in the 2015 AFC Champions League Group Stage up for grabs. ~ THE AFC
JOHOR DARUL TA'ZIM CROWNED MALAYSIA SUPER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
August 22nd, 2015Kuala Lumpur: AFC Cup quarter-finalists Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) retained their Malaysia Super League crown on Saturday, a night of high drama that saw both them and nearest rivals Pahang beaten away from home.
JDT, who face Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol in the first leg of their AFC Cup’s last eight clash on Tuesday, had gone into their game at Felda United with a two point cushion at the top of the table and knowing that a win would secure back-to-back title wins.
However their best laid plans were soon ripped to shreds as Shahrul Saad opened the scoring for Felda and Indra Putra Mahayuddin converted a penalty after Junior Eldstal – who was duly sent off – had upended Ndumba Makeche in the box with only 11 minutes gone.
Prolific Argentine striker Luciano Figueroa reduced the deficit in the 35th minute with a spot kick of his own following Christie Jayaseelan’s handling offence.
JDT huffed and puffed throughout the second half, but failed to get back on level terms, although it mattered little in the end as news filtered through that fellow continental hopefuls Pahang had lost 3-1 in Terengganu to ensure Mario Gomez’s side of top spot. ~ The AFC
JOHOR DARUL TA'ZIM CROWNED AFC CUP CHAMPIONS
October 31st, 2015Dushanbe: Argentinian midfielder Leandro Velazquez scored the only goal of the game as Johor Darul Ta’zim became the first Malaysian club to claim a continental title with a 1-0 win over Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol in the final of the AFC Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Velazquez scored in the 23rd minute with a low strike to secure the trophy for the Malaysian side, who had become the first club from their nation to appear in a continental club final since Selangor were losing finalists in the inaugural Asian Club Championship final in 1967.
Played out in front of a packed Republican Central Stadium in the Tajikistan capital, Istiklol had the backing of the majority of the crowd and it was the home side who settled quickest and who had the better of the opening exchanges.

Ergashev rues missed Istiklol opportunities
Manuchehr Dzhalilov went closest to claiming the game’s first goal when his shot slipped under goalkeeper Farizal Marlias, only for Aidil Zafuan to hack the ball to safety while at the other Velazquez forced Istiklol goalkeeper Nikola Stosic into action soon after.
Dzhalilov was again involved for Istiklol when his attempt was parried clear, and just minutes later the home side thought they had taken the lead when Khurshed Mahmudov’s effort crossed the goal line only for play to be called back for an earlier infringement.
Manuel Bleda then volleyed over the bar as Istiklol continued to swarm forward but, in the 23rd minute, the Malaysian side took the lead against the run of play.
The Tajik club’s defence failed to clear Safiq Rahim’s corner convincingly and Velazquez strode into the penalty area before sliding a low shot under Stosic and into the bottom corner.
JDT skipper Safiq Rahim named AFC Cup final MVP
Istiklol thought they had pulled level six minutes into the second half when Dzhalilov put the ball in the back of the net with a shot on the turn, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
As time ran out, the Tajik side cranked up the pressure. With 17 minutes remaining, Dzhalilov saw his attempt acrobatically tipped over the bar by Marlias while, seconds later, Bleda almost managed to bundle the ball over the line.
Istiklol continued to press with both Dzhakhongir Dzhalilov and Manuchehr Dzhalilov both hitting the side netting with shots from inside the penalty area but, despite their increasing desperation, Istiklol were unable to find a way through and Johor DT held on to claim a win that had their small band of travelling fans celebrating in style. ~ The AFC
JDT KICK OFF 2016 WITH SULTAN HAJI AHMAD SHAH CUP TRIUMPH
February 13th, 2016Johor Bahru: AFC Cup reigning champions Johor Darul Ta’zim opened their 2016 campaign by winning the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup after beating Selangor on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Larkin Stadium on Saturday.
It was JDT who broke the deadlock right on the stroke of halftime, when Hariss Harun did well to beat Robert Cornthwaite inside the six-yard box and meet Safiq Rahim’s corner with a thumping header into the back of the net.
However, the Red Giants equalised in the 60th minute when Hafiz Kamal lined up a freekick on the right and, with everyone expecting him to swing in a cross, went straight for goal and caught Farizal Marlias out with a sublime 25-yard effort at the near post.
With neither side able to find the winner in the remaining half-hour, the tie was then decided by penalties – where it was Selangor defender Azrif Nashrulhaq who faced the misfortune of failing to convert the crucial spot-kick which ultimately handed Darul Ta’zim a 7-6 victory in the shootout.
Although the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup is the traditional curtain raiser to the new Malaysian football season, pitting the reigning Super League champions against the previous year’s winners of the Malaysia Cup, it also counts as a league match – meaning both JDT and Selangor had to settle for a point in their campaign opener.
The two teams are also in action in the AFC Cup in just over a week’s time with Harimau Selatan hosting Myanmar’s Ayeyawady United in Group H, while the latter visit Philippine outfit Ceres La Salle in Group E.
Mario Gomez’s JDT side will head into the tournament as defending champions, after they made a remarkable run to the final before beating Istiklol 1-0 last year to become the competition’s first winners from the East Zone. ~ The AFC
JDT BEAT PKNS TO WIN FIRST-EVER MALAYSIA FA CUP CROWN
May 14th, 2016Shah Alam: Johor Darul Ta’zim were crowned Malaysia FA Cup champions for the first time in their history after beating PKNS FC 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Shah Alam Stadium.
It was PKNS who got off to a dream start after five minutes when they were awarded a penalty, paving the way for Gabriel Guerra to send Izham Tarmizi the wrong way with an emphatic strike into the top corner.
But in the 16th minute, Darul Ta’zim were awarded a spot-kick of their own after Jorge Pereyra Diaz was brought down inside the box by opposition goalkeeper G. Jeevanathan, and captain Safiq Rahim made no mistake in converting from 12 yards.
Five minutes after the half-hour mark, Diaz put his side in front when a quickly-taken freekick saw him break free inside the box and, although his initial shot was blocked just before the line, the rebound fell kindly for him to lash a follow-up effort into the back of the net.
Despite their best efforts in the second half, PKNS were just unable to find a way past their resilient opponents, as Mario Gomez’s charges held out to win the first major piece of silverware Malaysian football has to offer in 2016.
The victory is almost certain to guarantee JDT continental football next year as, based on this year’s allocation, the FA Cup winners are handed a spot in the AFC Cup.

JDT WINS SUPER LEAGUE TITLE FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
September 9th, 2016
Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) becomes the first team in the history of Malaysia Super League to win the league title three years in a row when they beat Terengganu 3-0 to give them an unassailable lead over Felda United with the latter still having three matches left to go. JDT secure Malaysia Super League title
August 5th, 2017Kuala Lumpur: Johor Darul Ta’zim secured an impressive fourth consecutive Malaysia Super League title on Saturday despite losing 2-1 to Selangor.
Following Naxto Insa’s first half opener for Johor, goals after the break from Selangor’s Amri Yahyah and Andik Vermansyah had appeared to have put a dent in JDT’s title aspirations.
However, the subsequent defeat of nearest rivals Kedah at Pahang duly confirmed yet another top-flight crown for the 2015 AFC Cup winners and the first for head coach Ulisses Morais who replaced previous incumbent Benjamin Mora in June. ~ The AFC
Johor Darul Ta'zim clinch Malaysia Cup
November 4th, 2017Shah Alam: Goals by Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak and Gonzalo Cabrera gave Johor Darul Ta’zim a 2-0 win over Kedah in the Malaysia Cup final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.
Malaysian Super League champions Darul Ta’zim started aggressively in a final played in a packed stadium and were rewarded as early as the second minute when Abdul Razak rose high to nod home a corner taken by Safiq Rahim.
Darul Ta’zim, who lost the Malaysia Cup final to Pahang in 2014, continued to dominate and could have widened their lead on several occasions but were let down by poor finishing.
Kedah were a different side in the second half and could have drawn level in the 55th minute but Baddrol Baktiar’s effort rocked the crossbar.
The team from north Malaysia were left to rue that miss just minutes later as Cabrera scored Darul Ta’zim’s second goal in the 62nd minute. ~ The AFC

But the Southern Tigers showed why they are the favourites for a fifth consecutive league title when they drew level in the 28th minute much to the delight of more than 23,000 fans at Larkin Stadium.
Argentinean Luciano Figueroa showed that his bite was still sharp despite coming out of retirement and not playing competitive football for two years when he scored an equaliser with a trademark header from Safiq Rahim’s cross.

Johor Darul Ta'zim claim fifth league title
July 10th, 2018Kuala Lumpur: Johor Darul Ta’zim etched their name in the history books after becoming the first club to clinch five consecutive Malaysia Super League titles after defeating Perak 2-1 on Tuesday. The result sees them become the first Malaysian side to qualify for the AFC Champions League group stage.
With four games left to play and with a 13-point lead, a win for Darul Ta’zim would see them clinch the title but Perak gave them a scare when they took the lead in the 74th minute courtesy of Norhakim Hassan.
However three minutes later, midfielder Hariss Harun equalised for the visitors and substitute Safawi Rasid scored the winner seven minutes before the final whistle to cap a dramatic comeback win for Raul Longhi’s men and clinch their fifth title in a row. ~ The AFC
JDT retains Trophy
February 2nd, 2019Johor Darul Ta’zim easily claimed their first trophy of the season. […]
For the second year running, JDT claimed their first trophy of the season in their first match of the season after completing an easy 1-0 win over Perak at Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium on Saturday. Perak never really got into the game for the entire match as JDT dominated from the first whistle.
Safawi Rasid threatened with a couple of long distance shots but when the only goal of the match came, it was down to a little bit of ingenuity from Gonzalo Cabrera. The Argentine spotted Hafizul Hakim off his line and produced a delicate chip into the top corner, five minutes before half time that ended up sealing the win for JDT. ~Goal.com

JDT edge out Kedah to lift first silverware of 2020 season
February 28th, 2020Mauricio dos Santos’ thumping header right before half time was enough to help JDT win their first ever competitive match at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.
The performance might not have been perfect but the result was. A win, three points and Johor Darul Ta’zim picks up the 2020 Charity Shield after a hard fought 1-0 win over Kedah.[…]
[…] Safawi dusted himself off and could have added to JDT’s lead soon after when he dribbled straight at Kedah’s defence only to find his shot spinning wide of the far post.
In the end, Kedah offered very little in the second half to change the outcome and JDT held on until the end with consummate ease.
A closely fought affair at the spanking new stadium that supposedly showcased the best two in the country and on the evidence of the match, that notion isn’t wrong.
